Cred că Rammstein a fost pentru cea mai lungă perioadă de timp capul de afiș al trupelor pe care mi-am dorit să le fotografiez. Și când am fost la un vârf de unghie să realizez acest lucru, mi-a scăpat printre degete. Așa că, atunci când am auzit că vor fi cap de afiș la Hellfest 2016, m-am înarmat cu toată răbdarea și am așteptat cuminte ca trupa să ajungă în cătarea obiectivelor mele.

Dar, mai întâi, să povestesc un pic cum am ajuns să mă alătur freneziei. Nu e un fapt foarte cunoscut, dar am fost detașat o vreme prin Franța, la Lille, întâi ca student Erasmus, apoi rămânând câțiva ani în plus pe-acolo. În chiar acea perioadă ascultam Rammstein în draci așa că, atunci când Ioana, o prietenă bună, și-a oferit spre vânzare biletul pe care-l avea la concertul Rammstein de la Lille, am zis da într-o secundă. I se termina stagiul Erasmus mai devreme și nu mai putea rămâne câteva săptămâni în plus doar pentru a merge la concert. Așa că l-am acontat cu ceva vreme înainte, vreo două luni, cred. Numai că restaurantul la care lucram a intrat în renovare fix atunci, în perioada concertului, și mi s-a oferit ocazia să vin acasă pentru câteva săptămâni. Cum nu mai fusesem pe la baștină de vreo 10 luni și cam simțeam că mă usuc pe picioare din cauza asta, am înghițit în sec și am pasat mai departe biletul lui Bogdan, om care mergea la concerte de ani buni. Toate bune și frumoase, am venit zu haus și m-am încărcat cu energie. Fac o paranteză: ați văzut vreodată ochii/privirea oamenilor plecați din țară de mult timp? Din experiența mea, le lipsește strălucirea, licăr care revine deodată cu o excursie acasă, măcar pentru câteva zile. Și cel mai mult am văzut asta la Ioana (o altă Ioana), care nu mai fusese acasă de aproape doi ani și care mai că țopăia după ce a tras o rundă de vacanță. Încheiat paranteza. M-am întors deci energizat, iar Bogdan mi-a povestit că a fost cea mai tare experiență concertistică pe care a trăit-o. N-am știut ce pierd, așa că nici n-am avut regrete prea mari, dar am simțit că am rămas cumva dator. Curios, nici nu mai zic…

Următorul rendez-vous avea să fie în 2010, la Sonisphere Festival de la Romexpo, când deja revenisem în țară de vreo trei ani jumate și nu ratasem nici un concert mare sau festival important de pe la noi (da, da, înainte de a deveni fotograf de concerte am fost un plătitor avid de bilet, contrar a ceea ce cred unii, că fotografii vin la concerte doar ca să intre moca – și am devenit fotograf de concerte din dragoste pentru muzică și pentru fotografie, nu pentru altceva). Iar la Sonisphere am fost prezent din prima până în ultima clipă, mi-aduc aminte că în fiecare zi am fost printre primii la poartă și am alergat ca disperatul ca să prind un loc la gard. Ziua 2 și ziua 3 nu mi-a ieșit la fel ca-n prima, dar tot am reușit să mă prind cu o mână de balustradă :)) Așa că, după ce pogo-iștii mai că mi-au rupt spatele la Slayer, Metallica și Rammstein le-am trăit în vârful picioarelor și într-un extaz absolut. Te luai în brațe cu oameni pe care nu-i cunoșteai, țopăiai de nebun, cântai la unison toate piesele, ba chiar am purtat și barca lui Flake pe brațe până la scenă 🙂 Iar la final, Mr. Kruspe a venit și a aruncat un pumn de pene de chitară fix în fața mea, dar pesemne că nu mai avea vlagă, căci mai toate au aterizat dincolo de gard. Cu ochi de vultur am văzut cum un BGS a cules cel puțin două de pe jos și le-a palmat. Așa că l-am luat deoparte și, ei da, m-am rugat de el să-mi dea și mie una. După insistențe prelungite, mi-a zis că nu poate acolo și că să ne vedem la intrare în juma’ de oră. N-aveam nici o speranță, dar m-am dus. Omul a venit, mi-a dat pana și n-a vrut nimic pentru ea. Așa ceva mai rar, nu? Nu eram sigur dacă o mai am, dar cine caută, găsește, right? 🙂

Apoi a venit episodul Rock The City 2013, când intrasem în tagma fotografilor de concert și acumulasem deja trei ani în branșă. Eeeei, și aici a venit marea dezamăgire de a nu putea fotografia, deși, de când s-a anunțat line-up-ul, cu vreo jumătate de an mai devreme, numai la asta mă gândeam. A fost atunci un episod ciudat, deși mi s-a promis pe toate părțile că voi fi în fața scenei, în cele din urmă n-am ajuns acolo. E foarte, foarte păcat că, înainte de a acorda acreditări, nu se interesează nimeni de un portofoliu al fotografului delegat, de-a lungul timpului am văzut în fața scenei chiar și oameni cu tablete. Să fim înțeleși, fotografia de concert e un mediu fotografic dificil, necontrolat din punct de vedere al luminii și, pentru a scoate cadre decente, ai nevoie, pe lângă echipament performant, de multă experiență. O să revin asupra acestui subiect într-o postare viitoare. Ce știu sigur e că la Rock The City 2013 managementul Rammstein a cerut 10 fotografi în fața scenei și că marea majoritate a celor care am stat în soare timp de două zile am fost respinși. E ciudat să vezi că cineva care nu prea are treabă cu fotografia (parcă era cineva de la Libertatea) vine doar pentru Rammstein, la un festival care ține două zile încheiate și unde are acreditare pentru tot ce mișună pe scenă. Cert e că atunci am rămas cu un gust amar, dar știam că lucrurile bune vin pentru cei care știu să aibă răbdare, așa că mi-am văzut de-ale mele până data viitoare.

Și, după cum spuneam, ocazia nu a întârziat să apară, anul acesta, la cel mai mare festival de gen din Europa, Hellfest Open Air, unde merg din 2014. Despre festival în sine sunt foarte multe de spus, este de-a dreptul impresionant, plecând de la organizare, spectatori și până la line-up. Voi reveni asupra acestei descrieri într-o postare viitoare, pentru că merită. Acum să ne concentrăm asupra concertului Rammstein, care au ținut capul de afiș al festului vineri, pe 17 iunie. Din anii anteriori știam că e aproape imposibil de a intra în fața scenei, acel loc e rezervat doar publicațiilor tipărite, dar Hellfest e printre puținele locuri unde se poate fotografia în voie din public. At your own risk. Și cum sunt maniac cu pozatul din mulțime, s-a mulat perfect. Tehnica mea e să mă plasez la o distanță rezonabilă față de scenă, rezonabilă în sensul de a fi destul de aproape pentru a fotografia detalii cu tele-ul și destul de departe pentru a prinde întreaga scenă la 50-70 mm focală. Și să se audă bine, desigur. Uneori vin mai aproape de scenă decât mi-aș dori, dar deh, te lași purtat de val, nu-i așa?

În completarea setupului de festival vine un scaun pliabil din plastic (din ăla pentru copii), cu care simt că am făcut deja războiul. Ține 150 de kile, pe ale mele 90 se pare că le suportă destul de bine. A fost trântit, spart pe alocuri, dezmembrat de câteva ori, dar se ține trainic, are două ediții pline de Hellfest și multe alte concerte în țară. Pot spune fără ocolișuri că reprezintă cea mai bună investiție a mea în fotografie de până acum 🙂

Să povestesc un pic și despre echipamentul care m-a susținut în acest demers. Știind că va fi heavy duty, am ales să merg cu două camere, al meu D750 cu celebrul 70-200 f/2.8 VRII, la care am adăugat un D810 și noul 300 mm f/4 PF VR, luate cu împrumut de la Nikon România (sau Nikoniști, sau Skin), ocazie cu care le foarte mulțumesc. De asemenea, mulțumesc RockStage.ro pentru acreditare. Deci, două camere, două obiective, câte posibiliăți? Păi tot două, 70-200-le pus pe D750, pentru a prinde cadre mai largi și 300-le pus pe D810, pentru crop până la infinit, sau invers. Am ales a doua variantă, pentru că-mi dădea mai multă versatilitate. Practic, punând 70-200-le pe D810, dacă alegeam să-l țin în format DX, ajungeam la un 105-300 mm, menținând și un 300 mm full size pe D750. În plus, eram destul de aproape de scenă pentru a mă juca cu focalele. Amândouă camerele prinse de ham (mulțumesc, Paul Voicu), urcat din când în când pe scaun și trăit concertul. De menționat că acesta e probabil cel mai bun test de anduranță pentru camere, în mijlocul unei mulțimi nebune de oameni, toți în mișcare și două camere bălăbănindu-se în toate direcțiile, în mare parte a timpului le ții în brațe, alteori ții una la ochi și pe cealaltă o protejezi cu corpul. Dar pot fi mândru că ambele aparate au rezistat cu brio și au scăpat fără nici o zgârietură. Eu, mai puțin :))

Despre concert în sine ce ar fi de spus? Rammstein, frate! Una din trupele pe care, dacă aș avea ocazia, le-aș vedea de 100 de ori fără ezitare. Recunosc, dacă aș avea ocazia să merg cu ei în turneu, n-aș ezita nicio secundă. Show-ul, precizie germană all the way. Și să apuci să-I vezi din mijlocul a 160 000 de oameni e de neprețuit. A fost atât de mare nebunia încât, la primele cinci piese, abia dacă puteam ține una din camere la ochi, era în jurul meu o mișcare browniană care m-a purtat pur și simplu pe sus cale de zeci de metri. De reținut că o bună parte erau doar fani Rammstein care veniseră în festival doar pentru o zi și doar pentru o trupă. Probabil că i-am enervat pe câte unii cu urcatul meu pe scaun, am încercat să stau cât mai puțin sus și în reprize cât mai scurte. Dar deloc n-am putut, n-aș fi putut vedea nimic prin pădurea de mâini care se înfățișa în fața mea. Singura mare problemă a fost punctul de stație fix, dar credeți-mă, era imposibil să-l schimb, am stat ca o sardea transpirată la maxim timp de aproape două ore. A meritat tot acest efort? Cu vârf și îndesat, sunt gata în orice moment să merg din nou 😀 Una peste alta, aștept cu nerăbdare să prind și un show din photo pit, pentru a mai schimba unghiurile și pentru a privi din gura lupului cum scuipă flăcări. Deocamdată pot spune cu mâna pe inimă că mi s-a împlinit un vis.

Am ales să nu pun fotografiile în ordine cronologică, ar fi fost un pic cam monoton, le-am amestecat tocmai pentru a putea fi privite degajat și pentru ca vizionarea să fie plăcută. Galeria completă, aici.

I think Rammstein was the band I desperately wanted to photograph for a very very long time. On one occasion, I came so very close, they were at the tip of my fingers, but it just slipped away from me. So, when I heard that they’ll be headlining Hellfest Festival in 2016, I’ve gathered all of my patience and waited quietly that the band reaches the front of my lens.

But before getting there, let me just tell you how I joined the frenzy. At the beginning of the 2000’s I lived in France for a while, in Lille, an Erasmus student at first, then remaining in there for a few more years. In that very period I was listening to Rammstein like a maniac so when Ioana, a good friend, offered to sell me her ticket to the band’s show in Lille at the beginning of 2004, I said yes in a split of a second. Her Erasmus stage was coming to an end and she couldn’t remain far a few more weeks just to watch the show. So I bought the ticket a few months prior to the concert. But it so happened that the restaurant where I was working back then entered a renovation stage, so I was offered a few weeks leave to come back home. Since I hadn’t come to Romania for like 10 months, I couldn’t resist and I passed the ticket on to Bogdan, a friend who used to go and see lots of concerts. He later told me that it was the best concert experience he lived that far. I did not knew back then what I’ve just missed, so my regrets were not that big, but I felt I was needy to see the band.

The next rendez-vous was to be in 2010, at the Sonisphere Festival hold in Bucharest, when I was back in Romania for three and a half years and during that time never missed a big concert or a festival held in the country (yes, yes, before becoming a concert photographer I was an avid ticket payer, on the contrary of what some people think, that the photographers come to concerts just to get free access – for the record, I became a concert photographer out of sheer love for music and photography, nothing more). At Sonisphere I was there from the moment it began, I recall that every day I was among the first at the gates and I run desperately to catch a place front stage. I did it the first day, and almost made it the next two days. After the moshpit nearly breaking my back during Slayer, I’ve experienced Metallica and Rammstein standing only on the tip of my toes and in absolute ecstasy. I hugged people I didn’t know, jumping around like crazy, singing together all songs or carrying Flake’s boat onto the stage. At the end, Mr. Kruspe came at the edge of the stage and threw around a handful of guitar picks but he must’ve lost his vigor, ‘cause all of them fell beyond the fence. I saw a bodyguard picking up a few and hiding them, so I went to confront him and asked for one. After much debate he told me he couldn’t handle me the pick right there and asked that we meet at the gates of the festival half an hour later. Unconvinced, I went anyway and surprise!, he came and offered me one pick. I wasn’t sure I still have it, but there it was 🙂

Then came the Rock The City 2013 episode, when I was already a concert photographer for three years. And along came the disappointment of not being allowed to photograph, though I was promised on many occasions that I wouldn’t be left aside when the time comes. The thing is, it’s such a shame that when it comes to photo passes, no one asks for a photographer’s portfolio. To be honest, concert photography means a difficult photographic environment, uncontrollable when it comes to light and where, in order to get decent shots, besides good equipment, you need lots of experience. What I know for sure is that back then Rammstein’s management credited only 10 photographers and the majority of us standing there in the sun for the last two days were denied. It’s really odd and frustrating to see that someone who’s not really a photographer (it was from a local newspaper) comes only to shoot Rammstein, although he/she has clearance to shoot all the bands in the festival. It was a bitter experience, but I knew that good things come for those who wait…

…and the occasion, as I said, came with this year’s Hellfest, the biggest metal festival of Europe, the place where I go every year since 2014. The festival is really impressive and it deserves special attention, I will do that in a future post. Rammstein was the headliner of the festival on the first of the three days, Friday, June 17^th. From the past years I knew that it was nearly impossible to get in the photo pit, that place is reserved for the printed magazines, but Hellfest is a place where you can photograph from the audience. At your own risk. And since I’m a maniac when it comes to shooting from the audience, it came out just fine. I like to place myself at a reasonable distance from the stage, reasonable enough to be able to photograph details with a telephoto lens and far enough to be able to see the whole stage and catch a good sound.

My setup is completed by a pliable chair (you know, those designed for children use), my good companion, it feels like we’ve been to war together. It can hold up to 150 kilos and as I weigh only 90, it holds. It has been tore apart in pieces, broken, threw to the ground, but it holds together. I can honestly say that it is my best investment in photography, so far 🙂

Knowing that it will be a heavy duty job, I chose to carry around two cameras, my Nikon D750 with the famous 70-200 2.8 VRII lens and a Nikon D810 camera with the new 300 mm f/4 PF VR, loaned from Nikon Romania (many, many thanks). Also, thanks RockStage.ro for the photo accreditation. So, two cameras, two lenses and how many possibilities? Two, of course, the 70-200 attached to the D750 and the 300 mm on the D810 to be able to crop to infinity… or the other way around. I chose the second version, for the versatility. Technically, the 70-200 mm on the D810 means 105-200 mm at f/2.8, DX format, at the same time getting 300 mm full size on my D750. I was close enough to the stage to be able to play along with the focal lengths. Both cameras linked to a double strap (thanks for that, Paul Voicu). Worth mentioning that this is/was probably an excellent endurance test for the cameras, in the middle of a crazy crowd, all moving at the same time, with the two cameras hanging in all directions. Most of the time you’ll hold them both in your arms, otherwise you’ll hold one to your eye, protecting the other with your body. I can proudly state that both cameras stood to the test and came out of it without a scratch. I was less fortunate :))

What’s there left to say about the concert? It’s Rammstein, dude! One of the bands that I could watch live 100 times in a row. I admit, I long to go with them on tour, I wouldn’t have second thoughts if I’d be given the chance. The show meant German precision ‘till the end. And to be able to see that along with another 160 000 people around you is priceless. So crazy that during the first five songs I could barely hold one of the cameras up to my eye, there was continuous movement that carried me around for dozens of meters without even touching the ground. One thing to mention was that there were many spectators that came into the festival for just one day and only for one band – for Rammstein. I’ve probably annoyed some people behind me by climbing up my chair, I’ve tried to stay up there as little as possible. But I had to do it, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to see the stage because of the many hands held up in front of me. My only problem is that I had only one station point, but it was really impossible to change it, I stood there imprisoned and sweaty all the way for almost two hours. Was it worth it? Plainly, I’m ready to go again anytime. I’m looking forward to the occasion of photographing them from the photo pit, to be able to catch the band from a different angle and watch closely how they spit fire. For now all I can say is that a dream came true for me.
